What’s discarded in one part of the world often ends up in another.

Re|Root began from a shared realization that waste connects us all and it doesn’t disappear once we discard it. In Ghana, that reality is visible on beaches, in rivers or drainage ditches, and in markets filled with used textiles & other waste. Thousands of bales of secondhand goods arrive daily, and while local communities have responded with resilience, growing pressure has been placed on already insufficient waste systems.

Our roots are in partnership. Re|Root was founded not to bring outside solutions, but to support and innovate on what already exists. We work hand in hand with community leaders, recyclers, creatives and entrepreneurs who are transforming waste into opportunity and creating healthier, cleaner spaces for the next generation.

Throughout Kumasi, we see changemakers everywhere: the tailors repairing garments instead of discarding them, the resellers repairing broken electronics or inoperable vehicles, the children learning that caring for the environment is caring for each other.

Together, we are building circular systems that keep materials in use, restore natural spaces, and create dignified green jobs. Our goal is a future where people and the planet thrive side by side: where the human impacts of waste are no longer ignored.

Driven by a belief in the value of all creation.

The most marginalized communities are the ones impacted most by the waste of others. We exist to humanize waste. To highlight the journey that discarded materials take and who is impacted along the way. Every piece of waste has a root and a route; from production and transport, to the streets, waterways, and markets it passes through, to the hands that collect and sort it.

The “Root” in Re|Root carries many meanings. It represents the roots of a tree, symbolizing growth, connection, and sustainability. It also nods to the routes waste travels - the paths of Aboboyas (tricycles) and waste collectors as they gather materials, and the supply chains through which discarded items can find new life. Our logo reflects this dual meaning, with roots that resemble streets, reminding us that change happens both within local communities and along every path materials take.

Through our work, we aim to reroute waste into opportunity, supporting local communities, protecting the environment, and creating systems where both people and materials thrive.
